The Nurmagomedov Bounce Back Resumes…
The Nurmagomedov name brings insurmountable public pressure, and undefeated records are almost expected at this point. However, unlike cousin Khabib, Umar couldn’t remain unbeaten in the UFC as he was matched with Merab “The Machine” and came up short in his first bantamweight title opportunity.
Sometimes, however, the bounce back is more important than the defeat. Umar has since looked dominant versus both top-ranked opponents Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo. Now, with another win over a fellow top challenger potentially lined up, another opportunity at gold feels almost certain after this, as his loss to Merab wasn’t exactly a lopsided one anyway.
Good, But Not Good Enough
Song Yadong has basically grown up in the UFC. But now, at 28, with a 12-4-1 record, he has the experience and projected ceiling of a gatekeeper at bantamweight. Yes, he defeated Figgy last time out, but inconsistency continues throughout his career, as he always falters versus the very best of the 135 lb division.
Song is good; in fact, he’s great. However, he’s not good enough to make a serious title run unless he makes serious changes to a style that hasn’t really changed over the years.

With Song’s power, is a surprise knockout possible? Sure. But in reality, and despite his clear wrestling advantage, I wouldn’t even be surprised if Umar can win all striking exchanges at a distance while the underdog struggles to match the footwork and close said distance.
Song is great offensively, but not so much defensively. He’s been a still target at times, and that doesn’t give me faith in his ability to win rounds versus a superior martial artist.
Umar will likely have his way in the wrestling department, but as mentioned, winning rounds with some striking mixed in is also a possibility. For this reason, backing the favourite to win the majority of the rounds and cover a -5.5 handicap feels justified as a reasonably priced prop wager that avoids the hefty ML price tag.
Nurmagomedov Wins by Decision at 1.60 [-167]
If the handicap doesn’t tickle your pickle, know that Song’s takedown defence, although pretty decent at 73%, isn’t going to fare well versus the well-planned and thought-out entries of Team Khabib.
So, should Umar land those takedowns early and often, there’s a great chance we’ll see what’s happened in 90% of his bouts to date… a wrestle-fest, points collected, and a decision win. And much like the previous wager, Nurmagomedov to win by decision gives us a much greater set of UFC odds rather than backing the straight-up money line.
