Inside the Octagon UFC Sacramento: Hernandez vs. Rodrigues Prediction & Analysis
“Fluffy” Hernandez Was So Close to Gold, Yet So Far
With an unbeaten streak of seven wins, five of which ended via KO/TKO or submission, Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez shot through the middleweight rankings to become a legitimate contender. Unfortunately, the storybook ending didn’t arrive because the Mexican-American was pitted against the relentless striking output of Sean Strickland in February of this year.
The beatdown Hernandez took was unexpected, as he couldn’t find an answer to Strickland’s impeccable takedown defence and non-stop combinations. Ultimately, he did well to survive three rounds, but with his first loss in five years in the bag, how does he bounce back?
This “Robocop” Has Firepower Strength
If Hernandez thought he was going to get it easier than Strickland, he thought wrong because Gregory “Robocop” Rodrigues holds a 10-3 record behind a 70% knockout rate.
Impressively, Rodrigues rectified one of his early career losses by sending a straight right down the pipe to knock out Brunno Ferreira back in May. So, if we scratch that loss, his only other defeat in the UFC came against a former contender in Jared Cannonier, showing that he’s hardly losing to scrubs out here.
Hernandez vs. Rodrigues UFC Sacramento Betting Picks
Hernandez Moneyline
When it comes to striking output and difficulty at 185 lbs, it doesn’t get more challenging than Strickland. So, despite the lopsided affair we witnessed Hernandez go through, it hasn’t been a recurring issue throughout his career. He’s fought plenty of hard-hitting, talented strikers such as Kopylov and Shahbazyan, while showing a respectable chin and a desire to win.
Will he need to mind his Ps and Qs in Sacramento? Certainly, Robocop is a force, especially in the first 10 minutes, but this is where I believe the more talented grappler in Fluffy can shine. He’s unquestionably going to have the greater cardio here, and Rodrigues’ lone five-round fight saw him wilt beyond the third to get KO’d in the fourth.
I believe Rodrigues’ cardio can be zapped, and once the threat of his knockout punch begins to dissipate, his overall grappling might not be able to match the speed and savviness of his No. 5-ranked foe.
Fluffy is the slight favourite, and I believe this has a lot to do with Rodrigues’ questionable cardio if the fight goes long. Furthermore, as a Cali native and with six months of recovery since the Strickland loss, I expect an eager Hernandez to turn up and remind us why he’s not one to be played with.
Over 2½ Rounds
Yes, both fighters have stoppage losses on their records, but they’re few and far between. For the most part, durability and/or crafty stoppage wins have been at the forefront of their respective careers.
Rodrigues has finished in under 12 minutes, 30 seconds, just twice in eleven years, while Hernandez’s one-stoppage loss (Strickland) in the last five years missed the under 2½ rounds by seven seconds!
I don’t believe Rodrigues has the output to cause early damage, and I don’t expect to turn his grappling into a submission win on a fresh Rodrigues. If a stoppage does arrive, I anticipate it coming late, with Fluffy as the likely winner.
For these reasons, the over 2 ½ rounds at near even money seems like a gift. We’re backing durability on a pair of tough s-o-bs.
