A first-round knockout on his divisional debut has fast-tracked the Brazilian into Saturday’s UFC Vegas 124 main event against Waldo Cortes-Acosta. The opportunity arrived after Sean Brady’s injury forced a reshuffle, but there’s nothing makeshift about the challenge awaiting Walker. Cortes-Acosta sits sixth in the heavyweight rankings and has his own ambitions to turn this unexpected headline slot into something bigger.

Johnny Walker has barely unpacked at heavyweight, and the UFC is already asking him to work a five-round shift versus a top contender.
Walker’s debut showed how dangerous he can be with the extra weight. What it couldn’t tell us was how that threat holds up over a longer fight against an established heavyweight contender. Cortes-Acosta gets the chance to ask those questions, provided he survives the explosive exchanges that make Walker such unpredictable viewing.
Is Walker building a credible heavyweight run, or has this step up arrived too quickly? Let’s get into my Cortes-Acosta vs. Walker main event picks, analysis, and predictions, including the best bets to play at ibet.

Inside the Octagon UFC Vegas 124 Main Event: Cortes Acosta vs. Walker Prediction & Analysis
Don’t Forget Who ‘Salsa Boy’ Is!
Cortes-Acosta spent 2025 treating the heavyweight schedule like a challenge rather than a suggestion. Five appearances brought four victories, including stoppages of Ante Delija and Shamil Gaziev within three weeks of each other. Between the busy schedule, the knockouts, and the pirate get-up to mock Aspinall, “Salsa Boy” gave a sluggish division some much-needed personality.
He carried that momentum into 2026 by making short work of Derrick Lewis, but the year has become considerably less enjoyable since. Alexander Volkov exposed the gap in class, before a thoroughly forgettable defeat to Curtis Blaydes took more shine off his run.
Yes, Acosta has back-to-back defeats and some of his momentum has been killed. However, let’s not forget who he is: a precise, hard-hitting heavyweight whose only defeats have been against top-ranked opponents.
Johnny Walker Title Run?
Johnny Walker, meanwhile, needed one well-placed knee to make heavyweight look like an excellent career choice. October’s divisional debut ended with Mick Parkin crumbling under a vicious shot from the clinch, providing exactly the sort of spectacle we associate with the Brazilian at his best. It was a welcome change from his previous light-heavy assignment, a split-decision defeat to Dominick Reyes that I’d happily nominate for the year’s least watchable fight.
Going up a division has already made Walker interesting again; now comes the question of whether he can sustain it. I’m actually surprised he ever made 205lbs, and now at his natural weight, perhaps, he can make a run at the title? Ambitious, maybe, but a win over Acosta would actually put his name in the hat.
UFC Vegas 124 Main Event Cortes Acosta vs. Walker Betting Picks
Cortes Acosta Beats the Chin
Walker won his heavyweight debut, and it seems like everyone has forgotten those chin issues. While it could be argued that no weight cutting will help him, we cannot ignore the four knockout losses he’s suffered in the octagon.
Now, unlike most heavyweights, he’s going to face quite a speedy striker in Waldo, who’ll undoubtedly hold the striking advantage here. I really think Walker has to finish this fight early, with something crazy, because the long game will result in him being outclassed on the feet.
But here’s the problem… Salsa Boy doesn’t get finished. For that reason, backing him to survive any kind of Walker onslaught is well justified.
UFC Vegas 124 Tip: Acosta to Win at 1.39
This Fight Isn’t Going to the Judges
We’ve already discussed the chaos of Walker’s style. He isn’t the type of fighter to sit back and play a technical game, and it’s usually an early finish or bust for him. For Acosta, he can sail to a decision when the opponent allows it, but his knockout potential is incredibly live when the opposition applies pressure.
All of this, including the fact that we’re dealing with the big boys, has the making of a stoppage finish. Plus, if you don’t like the juice attached to Acosta’s money line, I believe this is the perfect back-up wager behind 38 finishes – win or lose – on their respective pro career records.
