UFC Vegas 122 Main Event: Allen vs. Duncan Predictions

Brendan Allen awaits in Saturday’s UFC Vegas 122 main event, where the fourth-ranked American puts his three-fight winning streak against a Brit who has won five straight. Duncan has already beaten Roman Dolidze and Jared Cannonier this year. Now comes his first UFC headlining assignment, and an opponent whose submission game makes every close exchange a potential problem.

Inside the Octagon UFC Vegas 122 Main Event

He’s “All-In”

The nickname “All-In” isn’t just another moniker. The Kill Cliff FC fighter is once again accepting a scrap with an opponent below him in the rankings, thus proving his willingness to stay active instead of waiting for fighters closer to his rank and arguably those who’d gift him a title opportunity sooner.

A 15-4 UFC record is even more impressive than his “anyone, anytime, anywhere” mentality of late. He’s entered veteran territory at the age of 30, and with his grappling and control being some of the best at 185 lbs, crushing another win streak this weekend will definitely put his name on the title contention short list.

Welcome to the Middleweight Top 10

With back-to-back wins over Jared Cannonier and Roman Dolidze, Britain’s Christian Leroy Duncan is now the UK’s best hope of entering title contention in Tom Aspinall’s absence. Better still, he’s just as entertaining and dangerous as the former heavyweight champ but lighter and more agile at 185 lbs.

The biggest question about Duncan is whether or not he can consistently defend takedowns in a five-round main event. Allen will be that test, and if he passes, it’s hard to see this fight going anywhere but in the underdog’s favor.

Duncan Moneyline

Could this fight turn into a cliché striker-versus-grappler matchup? Undoubtedly. The first round will be the measuring stick for how this fight plays out, as Allen’s takedowns will need to succeed for him to trust grappling as a game plan.

But here’s the thing: Allen is happy to strike. So, should the takedowns falter, he will throw hands, with the main difference being the power and danger that Duncan brings compared to the kickboxing with the likes of Shahbazyan or de Riddler.

We’ve watched Duncan handle Cannonier’s and Dolidze’s takedown attempts, and I’m not particularly sold on Allen’s wrestling. Yes, his grappling and control are slick, but getting CLD to the mat won’t be easy, and in a striking battle, there’s only one winner here!

Duncan to win at 1.94 [-106]

This Fight Isn’t Going the Distance

If picking a side in this bout isn’t tickling your fancy, there’s plenty of reason to think this one could end inside the distance. For starters, I do think there’s an asterisk around Duncan’s gas tank, so an Allen stoppage late in the fight is viable. The Brit has looked tired on occasion heading into the third round, and now, with an extra 10 minutes to deal with, Allen might pose a late grappling threat.

Allen’s durability has been solid. However, CLD’s unique striking style isn’t something he’s dealt with much. Sean Strickland and Chris Curtis are the two knockout losses on his record, and although they were some time ago, Duncan’s unpredictable combination offense is a level above those two and could be a knockout threat capable of ending this fight before the judges intervene.
